KHAJOOR PE ATKE MOVIE REVIEW

Story: Hilarity ensues when a member of the Sharma family tethers between life and death as his relatives from across the country set up camp in Mumbai waiting for the inevitable that seems to have been delayed, indefinitely. Review: As Devinder Sharma’s life hangs in the balance in an ICU in a Mumbai hospital, his close family have no choice but to travel to the city to be with him in the time of crisis. The only thing is that Devinder isn’t blessed with the perfect family; they’re all perfectly dysfunctional instead. And perfectly middle class, too. As the eldest brother Jeetendar (Manoj Pahwa) pays double for air tickets for his entire family against the wishes of his wife, the younger one, Ravinder (Vinay Pathak) pinches pennies instead, hoping to get a cheaper deal to fly to Mumbai. They’re not being awkward here. This is how middle-class families operate. As days go by and Devinder does not show any signs of improving, his extended brood try to make the best out of their time ...

ANGREZI MEIN KEHTE HAIN MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: When love goes flying out of the window, a middle-aged couple struggles to keep their lives together and rekindle their romance that was long buried under the burden of domestic responsibilities. REVIEW: People meet, fall in love and after a few years of staying together and crawling through the madness that is life, they come face-to-face with the reality that love is after all a transient emotion. Set in the land of Ganges-Varanasi, ‘Angrezi Mein Kehte Hain’ is a stark reflection of perhaps the mind-set of every middle-aged couple in the world, scouting for answers pertaining to lack of love between them and this couple in question, is no different. Everything seems to be going well for Yashwant Batra (Sanjay Mishra)—a pot-bellied government servant who has a submissive wife Kiran (Ekavali Khanna) and a rebellious daughter Preeti (Shivani Raghuvanshi)—but there is a strong aura of disappointment and years of pent up frustration that looms over the Batra household. Both th...

HIGH JACK MOVIE REVIEW

Story: A flight from Goa to Delhi is hijacked by some disgruntled employees of the airline, as they look to settle scores with the owner. Caught mid-air in this situation are a high-on-drugs DJ, a crabby middle-aged couple and many other passengers. The DJ manages to drug the others on the flight as well and what ensues is a bizarre sequence of events. Review: A DJ (Sumeet Vyas), who promises to rescue his father's dispensary from penury by playing at a New Year’s gig in Goa, finds out that his plans have gone awry because he has been tricked. The party turns out to be a hoax and he is left stranded in Goa without any money. During a night of intoxication, he agrees to carry drugs with him on his flight back in exchange for money. To rid himself of nervousness he takes the drugs while on the flight. A hijack of the aircraft by the airline’s employees ensues with Vinit (Mantra) heading the mission. That sums up the wafer-thin plot of the film. The writers seem to have suffered ...

PARMANU: THE STORY OF POKHRAN MOVIE REVIEW

Story: In 1995, Ashwath Raina (John Abraham) an IAS officer, suggests that India conduct its own set of nuclear tests to stay ahead in the nuclear race with China and Pakistan. After the initial test fails under pressure from America, Raina gets a second chance in 1998 under the new reign of then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Review: ‘Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran’ is exactly what the title suggests. It’s a part fiction, part fact build up to the Pokhran II tests in 1998, after which India was recognised as a nuclear power on the global stage. While it is inspired by this real-life event, it’s story doesn’t follow India’s nuclear program to the T. It takes a few, cinematic liberties, in the way our scientific community and armed forces beat the American intelligence and surveillance systems to successfully test three nuclear bombs in the desert of Pokhran, Rajasthan. It is not an authentic recreation of history, but ‘Parmanu’ is a fairly entertaining look at a story that evokes the right...

BIOSCOPEWALA MOVIE REVIEW

Bioscopewala Story: Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s famous short story 'Kabuliwala', the film is about a young girl’s quest to discover more about her dead father’s friend who used to play bioscope shows for her as a kid. Bioscopewala Review: Estranged from her photographer father Robi Basu (Adil Hussain), Mini (Gitanjali Thapa) has to travel back to Kolkota from France where she is studying, to collect her father’s remains after his airplane meets with a freak crash. Turns out, he was traveling to Afghanistan for reasons unknown to her. What comes as another shock to her is the fact that her father has obtained custody of an old friend of his, the bioscopewala Rehmat Khan (Danny Denzongpa) who has a dark past that is left to Mini to uncover if she cares to. Debutant filmmaker Deb Medhekar has quite skilfully adapted Tagore’s classic story for the screen. He has weaved an emotionally rich spectacle in the form of Bioscopewala about the bond between fathers and daughters. Th...

VEERE DI WEDDING MOVIE REVIEW

Image
VEERING TOWARDS A DIFFERENT PATH Story: Kalindi (Kareena Kapoor Khan), Avni (Sonam Kapoor Ahuja), Sakshi (Swara Bhasker) and Meera (Shikha Talsania) are childhood friends. Kalindi and Rishabh (Sumeet Vyas) are getting married, and the four gal pals come together for their veere’s wedding. But of course, there can be no shaadi without showsha and a lot of drama. This wedding celebration brings out skeletons from the closet, unspoken truths and some harsh realities as well. Review: Four friends dealing with life, love, marriage and heartbreak isn’t an unheard of concept. But what makes ‘Veere Di Wedding’ a unique prospect is that here the pack of performers, is led by four ladies who make their choices, stand by them and have the guts to live their life the they want. There’s nothing holding back these gutsy girls. They speak their mind with fearless abandon, while they’re talking about sex before marriage, the lack of it post marriage, about orgasms and sex toys. They giggl...

BHAVESH JOSHI SUPERHERO MOVIE REVIEW

A MOSTLY HUMAN SUPERHERO Story: A young man discovers he's destined to become a vigilante when one of his friends is killed. Review: He can’t fly or swing from rooftops. He doesn’t have a million dollar armoured suit with fancy gadgets. He doesn’t have a magic ring to give him powers overnight or super strength. But, he’s our very own homegrown superhero – a simple man made of flesh and bones, with a bleeding heart. In Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, Harshvardhan Kapoor, Priyanshu Painyuli & Ashish Verma play three college mates who are more socially conscious than your average graduate. Kapoor & Painyuli’s characters take this a lot more seriously and begin to intervene in local issues as they champion the cause of the common man. But things eventually escalate and get terribly out of hand. One of them dies while trying to reveal a corrupt plot at the hands of a local politician, played by Nishikant Kamat. The other is then left to choose his destiny. Bhavesh Joshi isn’t a...
